The rap duo of sophomore Jacob Weaver and senior Austin Carney won first place at Northwest University’s second annual Battle of the Bands hosted by NU Unplugged – an event that invites prospective students to glimpse into the culture and life of NU.
A sea of glow sticks filled the chapel Thursday as students came to support their peers and witness the musical talent at NU.
The competition was fierce as the performers brought their unique sound and talents to the stage. Besides Weaver and Carney, other artists who competed were junior Siobhon McManus and freshman Owen Chung in “Turn Down for Brown,” former student Lauren Haas and sophomore Sydney Bell in “Sincerely, Soul,” and “King” led by junior Niko Johnson.
Each group went home with a prize. As first-place winners, Weaver and Carney were presented with a $100 Guitar Center gift card and an acoustic guitar with the NU Unplugged logo used as the official Battle of the Bands trophy.
Turn Down for Brown won the runner-up prize of $75 for their acoustic performance. Queen cover band King and the pop cover duo Sincerely, Soul came in third and fourth place, respectively, each receiving a $50 gift card.
